Teamwork defined

EHS students coordinate and host grand opening

It’s 9 o’clock on a Monday night and a lively group of students is discussing the final details of the Education and Human Services Building grand opening.

An excited energy surrounds the event, and they know it.

The students have worked tirelessly the past several months coordinating this celebration as part of their event management class. Now, with more than 3,200 personal invitations and 70,000 e-mail invitations already sent, it’s crunch time for meeting all their deadlines. The grand opening is just four short days away.

Lori Tuma, the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services Administration faculty member who teaches the class, knew her students would shine.

“Students in the event management minor not only bring talent and skill, but they also bring a collaborative teamwork approach,” she says. “I knew that whatever challenges they would face, they would pull through.”

In addition to the event management students, members from several college-related student organizations volunteered to ensure the event’s success. Such organizations included Student Council for Exceptional Children, Kappa Delta Pi, Collegiate Middle Level Association at CMU, and Association for the Education of Young Children.

The students were involved in every aspect of planning the event, from choosing the music to coordinating tours of the building. After months of dedication, the students say they feel happy to see their work come together.

“I’m so glad that I was able to be involved in the grand opening,” says Alisha Garlow, a senior who is majoring in food service administration. “While it was fun, it definitely wasn’t easy. We had our bumps in the road, but now that it’s all coming together I’m so proud to see how it’s turning out.”
